Anxiety, depression, eating disorders, PTSD, suicide.
These are uncomfortable topics. For most people, these are emotions that are encountered briefly, based on circumstances. For others, these are not just emotions, but a daily battle.
A battle is a hostile encounter between opposing forces. To engage in battle is to contend with full strength, skill or resources; to fight, to struggle. Many people who struggle with mental illness are aware at some level that their fears are irrational, their despair has no cause, and others who struggle simply cannot see truth when they look in the mirror. Memories come uncontrollably. The battle is long, the fight is hard. Giving up may feel like the thing to do. But people are inherently worthy of life, love and healing — no matter what they look like, no matter where they are in their journeys, no matter what they are or aren’t able to do.
Why do we bring awareness to mental health? News outlets have been saying for the last 5 years we have a “mental health crisis” in America. It is likely you know someone who is fighting a daily battle. It’s time we had real conversations with our family and friends. It may be you who is in this daily battle. It may be you who needs to be honest and open. If you are the one who knows it’s time to ask for help beyond yourself, know you are not alone. The struggle is real.
